Barooga Visitor Information

Barooga, located 680 kilometers south west of Sydney, has a population of about 1,500. It is the twin sister city of Cobram, which is across the Victorian border. Being only a two and a half hour drive from Melbourne, it is a popular holiday destination. Barooga got its name from the first sheep station established in 1847, which still exists until now just outside of town. It offers two registered clubs, a 36-hole golf course and river attractions. It also boasts a large Botanical Garden, a twenty metre swing bridge, Quicks Beach, walking tracks and the Barooga Markets. There are also a lot of numerous activities to do while in Barooga. A picnic at one of the 103 sandy beaches along the Murray River, while taking a swim is a popular pastime. During crayfish season, which is from June to August, hunting for crayfish is a popular event participated by locals and tourists alike. Although a rather small town, Barooga has a lot to offer as a pastime and destination, which is why it is most popular for vacationers near Melbourne and surrounding areas.
